My chain has started to do something that can best be described as a soft squidgyness, with the pedal moving but before the power hits the wheel. It happens every few days, usually when I'm putting in a hard acceleration. It's *very* similar to the sensation when the first hard pedal movement on a newly-screwed-on screw-on block tightens it up - except that this is a block, not a cassette. Of course, Sod's Law confirms that I can't reproduce this with the bike on the stand. All the chainlinks seem free. The teeth are starting to get towards sharks-teeth/chain-suckage on the chainset, but I can't see how that would produce the pedal-turning-but-no-wheel-turning sensation, since chainsuckage is on the dead side. The rear wheel isn't twisted in the frame, and the quick release is done up well.

It could be either that the freewheel is not engaging properly and slipping under load or initial re-engagement or it could be a worn chain slipping over the cassette teeth (although the latter usually makes an obvious chain slipping noise.

Wild shot in the dark, but when I got a similar sensation under hard acceleration, it was because my tyres weren't pumped hard enough and there was a slight, squidgy slipping happening.

Both of those usually result in sudden complete lack of drive, if only for a moment. Doesn't sound like the problem to me, unless silent clutch type freehubs behave like that?
- - - - Could it be your imagination, Richard? I don't mean to be disrespectful, I've imagined same thing! There's simply nothing that could produce that kind of squidginess on my bikes, and I know what you mean about loose blocks: I remember what they felt like when freshly fitted.
Perhaps some other softness on the bike is causing the sensations. Soft tyre? Saddle gone funny? Frame disinitigrating!? Or wheel slip on wet drain covers?

Does it happen with both feet? It could be a slightly loose crank.

What happens if you coast ? Do you get some occasional chain slap on the _upper_ run of the chain ?
I've a dose of this at the moment. The freehub (an XT with very few miles on it, so I expected better) is starting to _stick_. This then allows the upper chain to go slack if I back off from pedalling for a moment, and if I take the drive up again there's a "soft squidgyness" while I pedal through the slack chain first. Very puzzling and it took me ages to spot what was happening.
