  1. From my brother in law:

"Oh sure, while on your bike you've been hit by police cars and downpours, but
can you top this? On the BikeE when I see ... a big snapper very, very slowly
making his way across the road. With all the traffic he's a definite goner.
Me, I pull up and try to prod him along with my front wheel, until he bites the
tire and gives me a flat! When I very, very carefully pick him up--he pisses
all over me. So I pitch him into the next pond as far as I can throw the
    [censored] and start walking home."

funny. There was a reptile or woods animal bites tire story gives flat here
last year, iirc. No kidding. What did you tell the LBS when you got a new
    tire.

Around here we know better than go after a snapper. A large one bit
the wooden handle off a shovel. I'm surprised it didn't do some damage
to the rim. I've seen a few really large snappers that you can't pick
up and those that are small enough to pick up you'd best be careful
around as that long neck of their's can come around a decent distance.

I am glad you saved him and it's too bad it cost you your tire and a
    flat.

Weird. Just today I saw a poor, dead turtle in the road; he'd obviously
    been run over.

How would you like it is someone tried to prod you along with the front

I'll remember to bypass these fellows when I meet them on the trails!

I'm not so concerned about the turtles as I am the snakes who like to sun
themselves on the trails. I always have visions of these things getting
    wrapped up in my tires.

  15. I have been involved in 3 turtle rescues over the past few years. Two horkin'
big snapping turtles and a box turtle. Those snappers are impressive, aren't
they? It still amazes me that they live in relatively suburban areas.

I just slide turtles off the side of the road with my foot....Duh

By the way you don't want to handle turtles, they are salmonella carriers.

I wouldn't recommend that with a big snapper. They can inflict some
    major damage!

I feel good about rescuing turtles. I scoot them across with my foot at the
    tail end.
Usually they will tuck in and glare at you, and let you scoot them across.
Snappers of course posture and hiss more than the other kinds.

I see them a lot along the river trail. Much of the geography lines up like
    this:

    | Sports fields/Parkland| |MUP| |shore vegetation| |old man river|

For reasons known only to turtles they make a trek from the river to the
parkland/sportsfields in rain and at dusk. [someone suggested they might be
going to nest and lay eggs]

And they are BIG bruisers. I'm guessing they probably mass at ~5 kg. Ornery
too. I stopped once and tried nudging one with my shoe and 'he' pivoted with
his back foot swung around somehow and latched on with his forleg and bit my
    shoe!
