    Officer's 350-mile charity ride

    A chief constable is planning to cycle 350 miles through his force area to
    raise funds for charity.

    Steve Pilkington, who retires from the Avon and Somerset force in January,
    hopes to raise £50,000 for Babe's Big Appeal for a children's hospice.

    The charity wants to build a £15m children's hospice at Charlton Farm,
    Wraxall, in North Somerset.

    "I am not one for great retirement events and I wanted to do something a
    bit different," Mr Pilkington said.

    'Personal challenge'

    "I have always been quite good at raising money and I have always had
    strong interest in children's welfare.

    "It is a personal challenge for me, because I hate bikes, but that is all
    part of it.

    "I shall be doing 350 miles at the worst time of year to do it, but it
    will provide me with a positive focus during my last few weeks."

    A police spokesman said colleagues would be joining various stages of the
    ride which starts on 17 December, from the force's Portishead headquarters.

    Yup!

    I have friends and acquaintances who have had to raise about £2,000 to
    register for 'free' trips to exotic places where they walk or cycle for
    less than a week, covering modest distances in spectacular scenery.

    All for a good cause [1] of course!

    I think it's reasonable to sponsor something which is actually hard. I'm
    still disappointed that nobody wanted to do the monopoly board bike ride two
    of us did one year (start/finish in Cambridge, and do the monopoly board in
    order - took us 183 miles, but we made it in under 24 hours).

    But I agree with JohnB and Helen about the 'pay for your holiday' ones.

    There is now a Hull Monopoly board - the only one in Yorkshire. I'll have to
    give it a go.
