That's shocking news. Just when I was thinking I should get into his
Radio One programmes again. Peel's attitude to music (and plenty of other
things) was inspirational to me.

ISTR an interview with him in the old "Bicycle" magazine around the time it
was edited by Max Glaskin, so he /may/ not have hated cycling after all.

This country seems to go into paroxysms of national mourning on the
passing of indulged royals and former soapstars.

The death of John Peel on the other hand is a genuinely significant
and deeply saddening event. The man made an immeasurable contribution
to (real) music broadcasting over a span of decades. Whether or not
some people understand, our nation has lost someone truly special.

I know he liked cycling; I remember reading an article where he
described how he and a mate would cycle to a country picnic site on
racing bikes whilst Sheila and others drove there carrying the food
and drink.

Years ago, he used to cycle commute to the London studios for his
nightly programme and got knocked off, in Oxford Street, I think. He
mentioned this on air and the symptoms that he was left with and a
doctor 'phoned in and told him to get to hosptial, which he did,
fortunately, as he was quite badly injured.

emotional significance. News of John Peel's death caused me to shout
"Oh no!" as I read it. Like the man said, I haven't cared this much
about a stranger's death since Ian Dury.

It's only when a genuine legend comes along that you realise quite how
hollow some of today's tin gods really are.

Same here and clearly remember tuning into Radio Caroline under the bed
clothes on my first transistor.

I saw one of Ian Drury's last 'private' gigs when he played at a works
do in London - brilliant and a real person - met him going to the gents
too during the interval.

don't think I've ever heard HMHB in my life but they did have two songs
called "all I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague away kit" and "why do 99%

(hangs head in shame) the last thing Peelie played that I bought was
probably Tangerine Dream, and a few things around '79. I was in a house with
some godawful group when their single was played on his show, they went
absolutely mental (no-one bought it though)
