  1. A recent lingering cold that took me out of cycling for two full weeks has
made be desperate seek prevention. I read in a Canadian newspaper that
"Cold FX " is supposed to be amazing
at prevention and treatment of colds and flu symptoms. I also heard that
it is used by a number of professional sport teams. Has anyone tried this
    an know if
it actually as good as everyone says it is?

Surprisingly, the human body is designed to deal with colds, by doing
things that we stupidly try to circumvent.

It clogs the nose passages (raising the heat, which starts to kill the
bacteria/virus), it produces special cells in the blood, which releases
histamines and that makes us feel sick.

So...unless you have a fever, the best cure I've found is to dress warmly
and go ride the bike (raising your temperature even more) and make those
    bugs suffer! <g>

Some ppl do ok on zinc-lozenges, but just remember, remedies tend to
suppress the symptoms and that can sometimes lengthen the cold.

Zinc lozenges don't do anything for symptoms -- they are supposed to
help the body actually fight the disease.

I think the original post was spam BTW.

My sister swears by it. You can get it at pharmacies where they sell
homeopathic stuff and it's been around for a while. SHe's been using
it for years. It' s a bit expensive, 20bucks CDN. My sister uses it
because instead of getting colds, they turn into horrible sinus
infections that require antibiotics. But she's been using this stuff
for years and has not had a sinus infection. You have to take it just
when you start feeling a cold. Once you get a cold it doesn't do
anything. But take it when you start feelng the symptoms and it
reduces the length and severity of the cold, so you get a 2-3 day
mini-cold with a stuffy nose and that's it. I hear something is also
available in the US, 'Xycam" but you can't get it here. Neither one
prevents colds, it just reduces the severity.

However, it's not really a cure because it doesn't prevent you from
being contagious. In fact, it can be more of a problem because people
will feel better and go out with colds and spread them around more. So
you may feel better but your germs are just as catchy.

THe other thing is they taste horrible and can be upsetting to the
stomach. You can't take too many. However, I once used them for a bad
sore throat and they did help but were just horrible.

I think the point is to take them the day before, when you feel that you
might be coming down with something. Anecdote tell us that doing this will
decrease the duration of the cold. Taking them once real symptoms have
    arisen is too late.

    Spam? Why?

Because it mentioned a particular product by brand name rather than
describing the type of product. That's rare in non-spam postings, and
even rarer in newspaper reporting. I can't conceive of a newspaper
writing that a particular brand of medicing is "amazing."

  9. Check some of the Canadian newspapers/newswire from about a month ago to
present (can't recall exact release date). There were some study results
released, mentioned by brand name no less, the med under study and its
apparent clinical benefits (statistically significant findings in addition
    to the clinical ones observed).
I guess I also wonder about your rationale re: product by brand name - I
can recall thousands of posts (albeit on topic, rather than off) mentioning
brand names of bikes, blades etc. - so...yes, off topic and brand name -
but in this case, no, not spam.

Have you ever seen a reputable newspaper describe a specific brand of
over-the-counter medecine or vitamin/mineral that is in fact sold by
mulitple companies as "amazing"? Oh yes, you claim you have. I sure
haven't. I can't recall any use of the term "amazing" by a newspaper
    talking about medecine in general.

  11. If you take zinc-lozenges or any zinc tablets, be sure to have some food in
your stomach. Otherwise, you could become nauseas.

Avoid the kind with echecha (sp?). they taste a lot worse. Now they
have sugar free zinc lozenges. they do taste better and you don't rot
your teeth as much. I think they work, overall. I also think getting
some morning excercise is the best way to deal with congestion, similar
    to what the Badger said.

I find this all very funny. I have been taking Cold-Eze now for the better
part of ten years. When I feel the slightest symptom of a cold coming on,
sore throat, etc. I start taking a Cold-Eze lozenge every two hours. True
you will most likely get a cold, but the duration and severity of my cold is
less than 50% of what they would be otherwise, I typically feel almost
nothing of a cold for the first couple days. Then it is pretty much gone
after that. I have never got an upset stomach from them, (even on an empty
stomach) they taste fine, BUT they do wipe out sense of taste of foods after
    a day or so.

    Dave
    P.S. not employed by Cold-Eze

  14. Well...I didn't claim the newswire said it was AMAZING. Perhaps those are
the mfr. claims....I've clipped, below, one place where you can find a
synopsis of the study results, (posted on CTVNewsNet (The Canadian
Television Network)) - note that they do include the product by name...
In any event, I am not here to debate the manufacturer claims...just wanted
to have some input re: peoples own experiences with this particular
product. And my subsequent posts were merely trying to figure out why you
    thought I spammed the ng.
    http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1097018992863_92428192?hub=Health

FWIW - it wasn't spam. Just curiosity.

  16. Despite the good things said about cold FX, I'm still going rush out at the
free clinic next week to get my flu shot. In Canada its being given free to
all who want it. I understand that the US has a chronic shortage because
its main supplier - Chiron had its liscence lifted. That said, Canada saves
the day again because the Canadian company ID Biomedical Corp is willing to
sell all is surplus non committed stock to the US. Unfortunately, ID can
only supply a mere drop in the bucket of vacine that the US needs to save
thousands of lives. I'm sure next year it will be able to give more.

Hopefully this will keep me upright on my bike. Its been three weeks now
and my cold is still with me although mostly now just a barking cough. That
is after expelling an endless supply of some pretty ugly stuff on my
morning bike rides. Drafting me these days is a big mistake.
