mechanical advantage - brake levers

  1. Does a campy 10 brake lever have a higher mechanical advantage than a
    XTR MTB V brake lever? And can the V brake lever provide enough force
    to be used in conjuction with a campy 20 brake caliper?
    May sound strange but I'd like to try out that setup but don't want to
    find out when it is too late that the brakes don't work. :-(

    You can get the mechanical advantage of any brake lever if you compare
    the length of the lever from its pivot to the crook and divide that by
    the length from the pivot to the cable attachment. The levers that I
    have measured are all 4:1 from ancient times to the present. I only
    looked at mainstream manufacturers.

    shimano is pretty main stream. their xt m739 levers are varaible
    between 3.1 & 2.3. an xt[r] lever with these ratios would therefore be
    inapproprate for the o.p.'s intended use.

    yes. campy 10 is 4:1, but xt[r] is between 3.1 & 2.3 to 1.

    no. i've tried it. believe me, even with maximum ratio available on
    the shimano mtb lever, they suck really bad. old style cantiler levers
    might work, if you can get some of quality. most were pretty cheezy.

    Probably can use a XTR lever with a DP caliper but not the ERGO with a V brake
    w/o an adapter.
