If you want both, try Netscape or Outlook Express.

I tried Free Agent once and hated it, but some people love it.

Gravity also seems to be popular with those trying something different to OE.

And also seconded. The interface is much better than Agent using current
conventions in UIs as apposed to the nightmare vision of nasty text and
strange icons that Agent seems to favour.

I haven't got far with Thunderbird yet although it does look promising,
but I quite like having a separate app for news reading since they
(Gravity at least) offer a greater degree of control and customisation.

Well, Gnus is very good, and is probably the most sophisticated news
client out there, but it is inevitably the choice of the Gnu
generation, and we're all aging. If you don't know what 'M-x doctor'
means[1] it's probably not for you.

These days I use KNode, which is one of your modern happy-clappy-pointy-
clicky things. It's reasonable. It's easy to use, but lacks a lot of the
scriptability and general mutability of Gnus, and in particular the
scoring system is rubbish.

However for an combined email-n-news prog, I'd vote for Thunderbird
as well. I use it for my email and it's excellent.

No no no no no. Slrn is the only one, but you're ok with vi. Tried som
of the others, but I've become so ingrained with slrn that I can't
change because I can't be doing with using the mouse to read news
especially with my lunch in one hand.
