On Sunday I cycled out to Stixwould from Lincoln to take part in one of
Lincoln conservation group's tasks in the environs of Stixwould's old
station (in busier times, http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LIN/Stixwould/ -
second photo down).
That was fine. The homemade soup and bread lunch was even better.
The way back after a day of exhausting scrub clearance, however...
In the beginning there was a moderate headwind. Then there was rain. And
darkness. Strange eldritch chanting could almost be heard echoing over
Nocton Fen. I discovered that as part of the repairs I made the previous day
I'd set the bars at the wrong angle and consequently my back started to
ache.
Then the p*nct*r* fairy struck. Cue cursing of such inventiveness that the
cows in a nearby field looked quite shocked and ran away. Wheel off, tube
out, then a fruitless 10 minutes spent trying to find the little thing that
caused the damage in the first place, a task I decided was impossible with
hands that were wet and covered in [censored]. Luckily, the new tube held up all
the way home. However, the fun wasn't over yet as the gears start to
mis-shift. Initially I thought this was just another artefact of my
maintenance the previous day, however even after switching the lever to
friction they still weren't shifting properly. I limp onwards, avoiding the
problem gears until, barely 50m from home, the chain snapped with an
enormous CRACK that echoed for several minutes, ejecting the sad fragments
onto the road. The cheap powerlink knockoff that came with the chain had
given up the ghost in spectacular style.
Hopefully, I've got all my mechanical problems out of the way for the next
year or so *touches MDF*
Incidentally, the Department Of Supreme Irony was active this morning, where
the immaculate angle of my cap was disturbed by a white van executing a
crazed overtaking manouevre just before a roundabout. The markings on this
van? "Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership"
Sigh...
