Assuming 9 speed,you don't 'change' anything.They shift a double or triple 'as is'. If your shifters are 8 speed, you need a new triple front shifter.

It is an 8 speed setup, I read somewhere that all you have to do is replace the lever from the 8 double to a triple. Can anyone confirm this?

You have to change the entire guts of the shifter.You are hosed.
