Recommend brake blocks...?

Cheapy jagwire ones from the LBS work fine with my LX Vees and no-names on
the back.

Seconded. Kool-stop dual compounds are now fitted on all my bikes (At
the front at least!). I can now do endos on the fixer (Marginally
disturbing actually. ;-))

It is a good compound but my brother's V-brake Kool Stop pads squeal like
hell. That's after trying two models and all the adjustments possible.

My road bike Kool Stops are quiet, though.

These sound like a favourite brand - I don't 'spose you
remember what they were called, do you? There are a lot
of Kool Stop blocks on Wiggle (and I don't see "salmon"
amongst them, so either they don't carry them or they're
discontinued).

The only ones that Wiggle seem to offer are their "normal" and "dual
compound" pads. The dual compound ones are half and half normal and
salmon.

I've just bought a number of sets of inserts (And some Aztec cartidge
holders) to upgrade the brakes on my bikes and a friends to dual
compound. My racer and recumbent have both had dual compounds at the
front for a while now. I don't know how well they compare to other
brands, but they are certainly an improvement over the standard Shimano
and Tektro ones.

I don't think they're *officially* described as "salmon" by Kool Stop.
Salmon is the all-salmon-coloured compound containing iron oxide,
available for various models.

The holders or shoes, complete with pads, are here:

despite the picture, they're actually supplied with a set of Dual pads:
that's half black, half salmon. These are almost or just as good.

The Campi model only fits Centaur/Daytona and above Campag brakes, I
think. I use the Dura model with my Mirage brakes (which are virtually
the same calipers as Veloce's). The slots did need filing a little wider,
though. Very good anyway.

Unfortunately Wiggle no longer stock the cheap bog-standard Continental
model (that doesn't require separate holder) in salmon.

Thanks to all for the advice. Although I cringe slighly
when I see "Kool" spelt with a K, I'll order some from
Wiggle and hopefully reduce that screeching noise!
