Was recently reading up on some reviews of same as I am considering getting a trainer myself. You might want to check:

If you page down through a few of the reviews, there is a pattern of comments specific to the friction pad self destructing. Note I have no experience myself, but personally I am favoring the Kurt Kinetic Trainer at this point. Of course feel free to elaborate why another choice might be the better one.
Have an old set of Cortina rollers (bought 30 years ago) and still going strong, but thinking a resistance trainer might be a better way to get into better shape over the winter. Course still want to go out on weekends as weather permits, but with the time shift coming, I expect some sessions on rollers/trainer is due.
Hey guys. First post here. I just got my new 1Up trainer this week. I don't have a lot of experience with it or any trainer for that matter, but I can say that this thing is TOP quality. I've ridden a bit on a Cyclops (not sure which one) and the 1UP seems better. It's not exactly like the road, but it's pretty good. I'm not the strongest rider by any means (started in August) but, I've had it on my biggest gear pounding as hard as I can and have had NO problems. I love it. FWIW.
Also, thanks to all who take the time to answer the newbie threads, I've been lurking and reading and almost without exception when I have a question, I can find a thread that answers it. So THANKS!! 😄

The reviews certainly put the 1upUSA trainer in a positive light. The Kurt Kenetic looks like a winner also.
However, I'm probably going to go with a NIB 2004 Cycleops Fluid 2 as I can get one on ebay for $220 shipped.
are there any uk sites that are selling it?
No, you can only buy it direct from 1upusa.com
Just got mine. Took about 10 seconds to set it up, changed my rear skewer to the one they provide, and it took another 10 seconds to mount it. It's REALLY quiet. Put a spinervals dvd in and got a really good workout. Very smooth, road like feel, coast down is nice, no slippage, and plenty of resistance when you want it. The manufacturing quality is first rate and it seems much more stable than the cyclops when I'm out of the saddle or doing one legged drills.

I just received a 1up last week. I'm using it to recover from a serious ankle injury so I've only done some very short/light "workouts" but it seems quiet and very well-built. It's my first trainer so I don't have anything to compare it to.
I was going to get a Kurt Kinetic because it gets great reviews as well, but after talking with the friendly owner at 1up I went with it because of the exceptional warranty (lifetime), 60-day money back (plus they pay for return shipping), their reputation for excellent customer service, and the fact it's made in the US (most others are made in China, of course).

I just got one. As others have said, it's a nice unit, well engineered, nice ride quality, and quiet. I have to say though, I'd much rather brave the cold than ride inside. Plus Cali bay area doesn't get that cold.
What is this strange thing you are talking about
An update - I put about 2200 miles on my 1up over the winter and during some days I couldn't get out due to storms etc. this summer.
I didn't have any problems with it at all. In fact, My son wanted to use it for his 24" mountain bike, and we also put our tandem on it. I sent an email to 1upUSA asking how to order another skewer (it requires you to replace you rear skewer with their high quality skewer.) The email reply was that two skewers were on the way - no charge. GREAT customer service.
Plus, it put up with us hammering on the tandem for 200 or so miles without a complaint.
Yes, I'd rather ride in the rain if it's not too cold, but for those days when I couldn't this trainer has been great.
Cheers!
i used it it works well
I haven't put much time on it yet, but based on my research (mostly online) I decided on the Kurt Kinetic, and so far so good.
Based on the type of reports I saw on the 1upusa, I suspect that it may be a nice trainer, but that there may be some issues... I have a suspicion that there may be a link between rider level and breakage. No reason to think so, just a hunch that perhaps the friction pads do well to a certain point, but once the wattage reaches a certain level that any minor defect in an individual pad would become an issue.
