Axles and Cones Question

  1. I think I have this figured out but I thought I would run it by the
    group and ask for comments.

    I have an old rear wheel with a Suzue thread-on freewheel hub and a
    solid axle. I want to convert it to quick release using the bike junk
    I have laying around home.

    I have a brand new 10x1x141 hollow axle but no cones. The Suzue axle
    is not the same diameter or thread pitch. I also have an old Shimano
    rear wheel (6 speed cassette) with a shorter quick release axle that
    has 10x1 diameter and pitch.

    I want to use the cones from the Shimano hub on the 10x1x141 axle and
    install that in the Suzue hub. Both cones are in good shape (they
    pass the ball-point pen test) and seem a perfect match for the Suzue
    cones (following the criteria in Barnetts manual).

    Any reason why this won't work? Or any comments in general?

    The 2 rear axles that you are swapping cones with are the same thread
    and both sets of cones probably fit the same 5/8 inch grease seals.
    The cups on the Suzue hub are designed for 9 - 1/4 inch balls same as
    the cones so you should be all set. I would invest in a new set of
    quarter inch balls so everything polishes up evenly.

    It's about halfway down the page. I'd consider it to be primarily for
    use in detecting flaws in the cups, which can be hard to eyeball.
    Cones are trivial to inspect visually once they're clean, assuming
    adequate visual acuity and/or the possession of a good magnifier.

    Why didn't you just get a Suzue axle set? They are readily
    available and cheap. And _that_ uses a standard m10 x 1 axle.

    Because I have all the needed parts already. That was the point of my
    original post. I appreciate your comments anyhow.
