  1. I've currently got a 10W halogen setup, and it chucks out enough light for
me to see what I'm doing. Does the new Cateye EL500 (I think that's the
number, biggest LED lamp they do) produce anything like the amount of light
I need from a backup lamp for off road riding in the dark? Are headtorches
    any good?

Duno, i just use a big flashelight with 4 D batteries in it, bungied to my
tube that goes from my head set to my seat tube.

The EL500 is made for a rider to be seen, but not to see. I had one,
used it one time and returned it.

LED lights are cheap toys. None of them put out enough light to see if
there is any competing light at all. Your 10w halogen is probably at
least 5 times as bright as an EL500.

You've obviously not seen solidlights. Bloody seriously bright for LEDS
(brighter than 10W halogen). Not cheap though.

Then buy them and let us know how it turns out. I just have to wonder
why you asked if you knew so much about the subject. But I was directing
my comments toward Cateye and other commonly available LED lights, not
an obscure boutique item. LEDs may or may not be the future of lighting,
but looking at the Solidlights web page, I really can't see any
significant advantage over HID lights, but no big disadvantages either,
unless they have the same sickening blue light of the Cateye LEDs.

I was just pointing out that LED lights are not *all* cheap piece of [censored]
that won't chuck enough light out for you to see what's going on. If I
wanted a set of solidlights, I'd get them. What I want is something that's
not terribly dim, not terrifically expensive, and I can keep as a backup
(with alkaline batteries) incase the batteries die on my Halogens whilst I'm
    still riding.

The El500 may do it, but I don't think you will be overly impressed with
the output. I'm thinking your best bet would be to get a backup battery
for your halogen and carry that along. It probably wouldn't be much
heavier, bulkier or much more expensive than an EL500.

It probably would be heavy if not terrifically expensive, as it's an SLA
    system.

How do you chuck light? I just got a brand new cygo light with two 6.25w halogen lights and I'm about an hour away from using it for the first time on a scary night descent. 1.9 miles dropping over 600ft elevation. Wish me luck!

P.s. NEVER look directly into any halogen light while plugging in the battery my eye still aches!

    Google: "Streamlight Polly Stinger"

lightweight, compact, tough as nails, rechargable and more CandlePower than
    a MagLight
It is what everybody on my PD carries.... I have 4 of them, one on my duty
belt, one in my duty-bag (with an additional spare charged battery) and two
at the house in the charging cradles in case we loose power.....
I also keep one in my Camel'Bak as a back-up when I go for night rides

Those look nice, but would never fly here @ the LAPD. Smacking someone
upside the head with a Nylon flashlight doesn't quite have that same sound
    as Aluminum.

That is precicely why we cannot carry metal flashlights in Memphis...
A kinder gentler police department (we get 15% OCS Spray instead ;-)
Rumor has it that saps (black jacks) are soon to be baned as well.

How much do you spend in batteries over the lifetime of the product?

it takes 4 d batteries..... the cheapies last a year, even when using it for
    "normal" flashlight stuff

Nice to see some PDs have a heart :-)

Note to self: Move to Memphis before resuming illegal activities.
