What would you normally eat for breakfast before a ride. I know it makes a huge difference because sometimes I'll eat one particular thing and run out of energy but other times I'll eat something different and feel like riding all day.

You want carbs to maintain your energy stores. I find one of the best sources is cereal -- just about any kind you like. Oatmeal is often highly recommended.
-
cereal, toast, porridge, coffee, juice.
If it's going to be a long day in the saddle, some of last night's pasta as well. -
Oatmeal with a banana mixed in. Yummers. Top it off with some hot chocolate and you're ready to go go go!

Toasted oatmeal porridge with flax seed for me, brown sugar, cinnamon flavouring or maple syrup. -
I have started cycling for one hour each morning before going to work and dont require any breakfast for that period. Sometimes i'll get up a little earlier and go for 1.5 hours. Then i'll have to have some cereal, just a small bowl of Wheatabix or All Bran and a banana for some instant sugar.
works perfectly.

Muesli, Toast with jam, yoghurt and some multivitamin juice usually does the trick for me. Muesli is the most important part for me i think.

3 days leading upto a long ride, increase your carb and fluid intake, 2 hours the morning prior to your ride have a good hearty meal, I usually have Sausage, bacon, beans, tomatoes, fried mushrooms, ash browns, 1 egg and cerial a little while before. you'll probably find that 2 to 3 hours into your ride you'll need the above, plus it saves carrying extra food along with you.works for me, during a 4-5hr ride i don't feel the need to eat or any lack of energy, when i complete the above. but when i take along food, and don't carbo load, then i have the tendancy to bonk during longer rides, and have to stop off for food and rest for 20-30minutes before i can continue

i do it 5 days a week, the carbo load ontop of it 😄 i had mine earlier.
x4 fried bread, 2 toaste, 3 sausages,x2 bacon, x2 blackpuddings, tomatoes, beans what more could a man ask for to start the day. 1 apple and a banna for sweet 😉 but i am not riding proper until sunday.
plus i remember reading somewhere that fat slows down the absorbtion of carbs from the gut, so probbaly just topup whats getting depleted from body stores whilst dipping into my food hall.

5 days a week, sounds good but what about all the cholesterol building up in your arteries? -

and i always thought, that the body if it required 2000ch then it would absorb 2000ch if it didn't have 2000ch as required then it produced its own, insome cases it over produces cholesterol, which is left to be built up in arteries.?
but erm grilled sausage, grilled bacon, grilled ashbrowns, Hmmm ... please don't correct me if i'm wrong, Since this is what i tell myself is the case, this is what i love to eat, this is the reason i am able to do so, plus if i do get any heart problems, or cholestrol problems, i'll worry about them as they arise but at the minute, i'm enjoying food and life.

you pig. 😄 j/kyeah, i love a fry up occasionally. I eat a lot of bran fiber to try and combat cholesterol...i eat what i want these days because i know i excerise enough not to put on weight. the occasional chinese takewaway or burger doesnt do you much harm if you putting in 100+ miles per week on your bike. thats the way i see it.
i am 5'8" - 11.0st

here next time you have a chineese, try crispy sea weed, the night before, and see if your ride improves, i find that i have an unusual amount of energy from carb loading, but more so when i have seaweed.i know what you mean about the colesterol thing, i try to eat enough fibre, usually in the form of shreddies, but i do try to keep it down to 3 eggs a week, and the days i don't have an egg, i'll usually have an extra 2 sausage and bacon, but as for burgers, Hmmm nothing like a big mac washed down with a litre of fizzy pop, or pizza's, KFC. 😄
but your not the first person to call me a pig, friends at work say just that when my plate is heaped and after finishing and all the name calling starts, since i won't acknoledge them whilst eating, i like to pull out an apple and tell them that its an healthy breakfast, plus i have a piece of fruit, sometimes even a banna more than can be said for them, alot being fatties with 2 pieces of toaste and a rashion of bacon. "what kind of meal is that?"
its just jelousy i think, the fact that i can pig out and still not put any weight on, its a shame really cause they look at me and show concern, anyone would think that they where gonna put the pounds on being in the vercinity of my healthy breakfast.

i used to NOT eat before i rode, then i read Carmichael's Food for Fitness. now i eat: tortilla spread with Nutella and/or peanut butter, with a sliced banana inside. also, i drink a fruit smoothie (watermelon, peach, cranberry juice). unfortunately, i have to eat this right before i ride, so i use the smoothie to get carbs quickly in my system.
if i am going to ride 2 - 3 hours, i will also drink a glass of Endurox with the above. i am not too happy with it as a recovery drink (i like Ultragen better), so i use a scoop and a glass of water (1/2 dosage) for carbs.

Have you never tryed using Rehydratin theropy, you know the sachettes of electrolytes that you get from the chemist when you suffer from diorhea, i find that one of those sachettes along with a normal carbosport Drink, by nutrasport (not an advertisement or sales pitch, just what i have been using for the past 8wks) is an excellent recovery drink, its even better when you use it on the move in a bottle. its like your legs become refreshed instantly since the fluid and electrolyte balance is somewhat restored!
probably not wize to complete this practise every long ride, but longer rides 2/3+ hrs it does come in handy.

I usually ride rides longer than 3 hours so a basic morning meal consists of granola crunch with yogurt, fruits (banana of course), soy milk, some leftover pasta or toast with peanut butter and honey....works wonders on long rides but count an hour before hitting the long climbs!
-
i usually eat a very very very light breakfast before a ride.
Like an apple and a glass of fruit juice.
I eat a real meal after the ride. -

I'd starve off that, my stomache would be growling 15minutes into a ride if i ate that alone, i'd probably spend the duration of the ride listening to my stomache other than myself and how i feel. i have a very very very healhy appettite, it maay not be a very very very healthy diet in some peoples terms, but it quenches my hunger 🙂i think that would be a great pre ride breakfast if you added a little more to it, if i was to eat that + it would be something along the lines of.
Apple+fruitjuice
plus a banna, x 2toaste x beans x tomatoes x 3sausages x 3 ash browns x 2 bacon,
Toated oats and nuts 100g: bowl of
Hmm ! left an hour to settle before ride, ease into the ride, and guaranteed as regular as clockwork 5hrs later is ready to be evacuated 😄 then i'm ready for one of those big pasta+tuna bake dishes within 30-60 minutes after a ride, then a little nap ,kip, sleep.....
