I was chatting to another cyclist last week and he mentioned something about cycling here in Australia that I had never thought about. He said the scariest thing about the possibility of getting hit by a car in the summer wasn't the potential injuries from the impact (which may be minor if the speed is low) but the fact that you may end up having to lie on the baking hot ground and end up with serious burns.
Yet another reason my wife should let me buy that recumbent trike! 🙂

I read about a case in a ride across America where one rider succumbed to the heat in Death Valley and ended up with his black lycra shorts melting onto his skin while he lay unconcious on the road.

Yuk! But I thought RAAM riders were pretty closely supported by their vehicles.

Aaah, fantastic, brought back childhood memories of getting to and from the local swimming pool running with my cousin from one patch of shade on the footpath to the next with burning bare feet in between. Shoes? Don't be silly! You don't get that in this country, although the roads do start to melt in the high twenties and sunshine. I guess the UK uses a different grade of asphalt to Oz.

Never mind that! If you're unable to get up off the ground, it's even less likely that you'll be able to run away from the Dingo's that come along for a nibble!

I recall a very similar story (possibly the same incident), a Dutch cyclist crossing the Mojave Desert ended up hospitalized with heat stroke and nasty burns from his Lycra clothing. Apparently he had no experience in travelling in the desert, and no concept of how hot and dry it could get or how much water he should bring. Lots of cross-USA cyclists travel at night to get through the long stretches of desert without getting cooked by the sun. -- mark

Me thinks we are thinking of the same story with the usual variations that creep in with the telling

Nah, not around Perth, it's ants you need to worry about! Five minutes and they'll have you stripped to the bone while a couple of their mates scurry off with your bike clamped between their jaws. They're seriously big, scarey buggers.

One of my mates, purely in the cause of science, tried to see if he could cook an egg on the bonnet of his (hire) car in Australia. It didn't cook the egg at all, which duly slid off onto the ground. However it did put a permanent mark in the paint. He then had a desperate hour with a can of T-cut before he could return the car.
