Since I'm a confirmed "grunt" and take great pride in it. I love YMC's honesty,
and writing and saying what he thinks, the way he thinks. If a few "bad" words
turn you off get over it. There have been an awful lot of people who spoke
plainly and were successful. I think that YMC is going to be one of them for
the long run. He's already accomplished a whole hell of a lot more than most of
rbr.

If I might, I'd like to take a minor potshot at George. Smilin' George was a
really good racer. I think that with today's training methods, bikes and
decent team support he would be about like Chris Horner and to me that's
saying something.

But George was NOT a good junior coach. He had an attitude that I really
didn't like. He took the senior boys out and beat them to death instead of
training with them. Now perhaps that was the way George trained in his days
and so that was his take on training. But only the 18 year olds could stay
with him and the rest would come back hang-dog and so tired that they got
nothing out of the exercise. They most certainly didn't learn to train
themselves.

George was brought in by Clark Natwick who was pretty much the opposite.
Clark could inspire people and it's a shame that he sort of dropped out to
do other things.

Maybe someday junior racing will start taking on some importance to the USCF
and then maybe we'll get some serious US Junior racing.

Hey Tom
I'm waiting for Adam to hang it up, and decide to create a Cycle-Smart junior
team. They have already had a lot of success with young riders and have a
fantastic attitude, connect well with them, and treat them right. They may not
produce all champions, but they would produce really good young racers who
stayed in the sport. That's just my experience with them. Just for the record
my son's not racing has absolutely nothing to do with them. They are there for
him when and if he wants to get back in, and have provided a ton of support
outside racing too.

It's interesting, funny & sad reading older messages about frame building
and, in particular, steel frames. My own preferences aside, there's nothing
wrong with steel, and I think the Italians really lost their way when they
switched over to aluminum and pretty much lost their identity. With lugs,
they could personalize the design and make it their own. Don't think
they've yet figured out how to do that with aluminum. In all seriousness, I
think that's seriously eroded the influence of Italy in the high-end cycling
scene.

Did they abandon steel too soon? Not spend enough time trying to
individualize their aluminum product? Simply rush too quickly into the fray
without a gameplan?

Now they're trying to make their mark with carbon fiber, which allows a much
greater degree of personalization than aluminum. Perhaps that will save
them, I don't know. It's just sad that, just 10 years ago, a world without
high-end Italian frames would have been unthinkable. Now, the numbers that
would miss them are very few.

A couple of the suggested posts so far are lame as can be. "When will
she make the team?" is a good post? "Doofus is a lame junior." Huh? Is
this some new RBR goof? Or is everyone's memory so short and recent
posts so bad that this is the best you can do? Cute how even such a
clearcut topic gets instantly derailed as well: the George Mount posts
are GREAT in their quality, and on topic. Remarks on his coaching are
not, same with reflections on Italian steel. Sure, they're decent
posts, just not related to the Great Post mission of this thread. OK,
where were we people? Let's get to it!

Amen for Italian steel frames, and I think it really says something about
where the world is headed when people are running out to buy fragile, stupid
light, carbon and Ti [censored] while they are 10lbs overweight, and way too
undetrained to need it. How about adding a few lbs on the bike for reliabilty,
durability, and beauty, and losing a few off the gut.
I know why pros buy that stuff but one they aren't paying to replace [censored] that
breaks, and in their case it may actually matter. For the rest of us it's
pretty stupid, but good for the LBS, so keep buying.
