Just got back from a holiday in Normandy. Over there the 'quiet road' cycle routes are well signposted, and each sign has a cartoon cyclist saying 'let's share the road'.
IMHO what a good idea, and infinitely better than the sorry little red numbers on a blue backgound that Sustrans uses, for raising the awareness of drivers that they're not alone.

There's one of these on the back of a street sign near where I live. Thing is, it's angled so that only pavement cyclists and pedestrians can actually read it!

They use signs like that quite a lot inthe USA. One disadvantage I've heard of is that some motoritsts interpret the sign differently from cyclists. Some motorists assume its an instruction to cyclists "Let's share the lane"
Some lanes are narrow, and in those one rides in the primary position. Some lanes are wide, and in those one rides, out of courtesy, in the secondary position. However, it's the cyclist's call which is which, not the motorist's
