The trouble with airhorns

Works for me. Oh boy do they work.

On approach I yell "passing", twice if they don't bother to move at all.

If they still insist on "owning" the road, a blast of air horns changes their
minds. (by that stage I'm right up behind them anyway).

Heck, I have cars move out of the way when I use the air horns.

I think what *usually* happens when I yell 'passing', is that they think I
have enough room to pass, except that they don't know I'm on a recumbent, at
about 700mm wide, it doesn't leave much path unless they actually do take the
effort to move over.

The air horn works for me too. Maybe the pedestrians are "different"
where you are? :-)

The air reservoir is shaped like a ~ 600ml drink bottle that you put in
a bottle cage or velcro to the frame. The air goes through a flexible
tube to a horn on the handlebars. It's all plastic, very light. You
pump it up to say 60psi through its normal Schraeder "car tyre" valve,
which would let you blast for many seconds, but a sharp tap on the
button is normally enough :-)

hey, I love magpies, admittedly less when they are strafing.

AirZound 3, I wasn't real close as I was coasting at 40+ and I wanted to be far enough away if they did react.

My wedgie is 850 wide, mirror edge to mirror edge.

Yeah, I've had no probs with the AirZound2, works a treat when required. As for the bloody magpies, I want a highly trained peregrine falcon to ride shotgun on the pannier rack (ie: gunner position) Or to fly along side & pick the little [censored] off.

BTW, Andrew, hope you're fine & back on the pedally soon. Almost got cleaned up by a taxi mid last year whilst walking across on the green ped signal (Brunswick St/Victoria Pde), seems as if some drivers have a problem seeing either peds or traffic signals as well....

My bike is currently locked away in the shed but from memory it's specified
on the air bottle itself. I think it used to be 85psi but the later ones
say 100psi.

What a [censored]. I bet when you have to use the "car" lane and a motorist
blasts his/her horns at you you find it quite offensive.

When I find myself meandering at 10mph down the middle of a one way street,
not leaving enough room for cars to get past, I'll consider it quite
reasonable for a driver to tap the horn to ask for room. As a cyclist, I
don't want all of the SHARED pathway, just part of it. You do remember how
sharing works, don't you?

Not when there isn't any room for that car to pass me safely.
If it is a one way, one lane street, then they just have to wait (until
the intersection).
