Glasses or Contacts?

Neither....LASIK rocks.

I had it done 4 years ago, and could not be happier with the outcome and the
freedom from glasses and contacts (both of which I had worn for many years).
That said, it is a medical procedure that involves your eyes, so if you're
interested, do your research and find a good doc (hint: it's probably not
the guy advertising $399/eye in the local classifieds).

Having worn glasses and contacts for so many years i really dont want to count, i recomend contacts for riding.

A number of reasons for this:
-if your glasses (percription) fog up you have now lost all site, with contacts you can just raise the glasses to see.
-the ability to carry spare lences for diffrent uses. I quite often carry my clear lences while wearing my tinted ones on weekend rides. the reason is that i quite often will stop at a mates place and forget the time and have to ride home in the dark. As i hate getting bugs, wind, etc in the eyes all i do is switch lenses and off i go.

The only downside is that sometimes, when I'm reading in bed before I go
to sleep, I STILL reach up to take my glasses off before I reach over to

Another interesting fact: Every single doctor who performs LASIK has the
latest, best new laser that no one else has yet. I have a friend who
says this makes sense to him. But then, he also spends hours explaining
Biblical paradoxes that make no sense to me either.

Contacts + decent sunnies work fine. But you can't really afford to forget
the sunnies, or the contacts dry out really easily and either blow out on
downhills or hurt your eyes.

Never tried prescription sunnies - but given the number of pair of (cheap)
sunglasses I've lost, I wouldn't want to get anything that expensive.

emotionally stressing because the vision is not where I want it to be.
But it's way better and I know it's early days yet.

Give it time...it took a week or so before my vision stabilized, and it
seemed to take about a month before I was comfortable with it. But, I now
wish I had had it performed years earlier!

I think my vision continued to improve for about 4 months after getting
Lasik. I still have some problems in low light situations, particularly
when I'm tired. But I feel that having Lasik done on my eyes was the best
gift I ever gave myself. No more contacts drying up and falling out of my
eyes during a race (yes, this actually happened) and no more double fogging
on my prescription inserts and sunglasses lenses rendering me effectively
blind with or without my glasses.

Happened to me more than once. Luckily, it never happened in both eyes
or I wouldn't have been able to see.

I'm only a -1.00 in each eye and not even restricted to glasses for
driving so lasik surgery still carries more risk than reward for me.
However, I do like being able to see 100% clearly so I want to wear
something when I ride.

I was worried that contacts would just come out on downhills or sudden
crosswinds. But I suppose with proper eyewear it won't be a problem.

I've been wearing soft contacts while cycling for around 4 years with
absolutely no problems. I use an eyedrop before riding with a lubricant in
it as opposed to plain saline rewetting drops. I usually use Refresh
Contacts or Clerz 2. I find that sunglasses with large coverage keep the
lenses from drying. My favorites are Bolle Vigilante and Rudy Project
Ekynox (not the SX model).

vision is "not where you want it to be" in terms of clarity because you

viewing through external lenses which apparently placed objects differently

It's never happened to me. My eyes seem to be especially tolerant of
contacts. The only problem I have is riding at night with no light, and
no windshield in front. I ride with squinted eyes and great risk.

*Proper* eyewear is the keyword here. First of all, forget about cheap
sunglasses and try some proper cycling glasses. They have huge
shield-like lenses for a reason, you know. You have to find a model
that fits your face so that the airflow gets directed around your head
properly. The worst thing is to have glasses that are too small so
that there's always a small but annoying _indirect_ airflow into your
eye. (airflow = dust, dust and contacts = forget about riding a bike)

I wear Addidas Twinys with my -7.0/-5.5 hard contacts without
problems.

You should be even better off with flexible contacts that are almost
immune to dust and impossible to drop.

Best of luck JT. I never considered Lasik, having the nagging fear
something would go terribly wrong. But over the years I softened and
began to consider it. Then boom, a close friend of mine had it done
and is now 5 months out with serious vision problems. She will never
see the same it appears. She's completely blurred past a few feet.
Terrified the [censored] out of me and has me ruling out Lasik again.
Vision is just one thing I won't mess with, even at the tiny 1 in
10,000 Lasik failure rate, or whatever it is.
