Hi, I am looking at purchasing a Trek 3900 or 4300. They differ in price by only $65.00 US. I am a beginner mountainbiker, and I know these are beginner level bikes. What I want to know is this: How much better of a bike is the 4300? If it's much better than the 3900 and $65.00 isn't much to spend for a way better bike, then of course I want to get that one. If there isn't much of a difference and they're virtually the same performance-wise and with regard to quality of parts, then I don't want to pay $65.00 more dollars. I don't know anything though about the difference between various types of brakes, derailleurs, etc.
I bought a Trek 4500 last year and it's held up well, and there's lots of rocks here where I ride.
I'd recommend trying both at the bike shop, and if the cheaper one seems to fit and work as well as the expensive one, then buy the cheap one. Although $65 isn't much in the long run if you end up riding it for 5 or more years.
For a beginning rider, I'm guessing either will do well.
