I think you should consider Mike's reply first. In addition to what
he, said there are more criteria than mentioned, but they may not

I had a thought a while back, that posibily there is a better way to
find correct air pressure for any tire/ rider / load condition. It
consists of thaking a combination sauare & mesuring the height of both
tires unloaded @ a reasonable pressure @ the rim /tire interface. Then
loading the bike w/ rider etc. & measuring again to set it to some
percentage of unloaded. simular to sag for motorcycle & Mt. Bike
suspension settings. My guess just off the top of my head would
something arount 85%. Of course it would have to very w/ different
stiffnes sidewalls.
Seems like a hell of an idea, but what do I know :-) John

Did anyone suggest pumping it up until it gives just a little when he wraps a
hand around the tire and mashes it with his thumb as hard as he can?

How about pushing the front tire into a curb and pumping it up enough to defend
itself?
