  1. This is my first post here , read on if you want. I think just need to put things into words... 😠

So today I skipped work. Yes I know I should not have, but I have a decent amount of time off and I was not up to getting up early this morning. I ended up taking care of things around the house, and around 16:00 I decided to go out for a 20-mile ride around Long Island NY. If any of you are from here, let’s just say it’s not the most bike friendly place, but I manage between the bad driving (hey I know, I drive with them all the time) and pot holes the size of my bike.

Anyway, a mile and half from home, some young kids merge onto my road from a side street on BMXes, and with out looking decide to cut diagonally across the road. Of course I was there going at about 17+ mph. As I realized what was happening, I tried some evasive maneuvers. Unfortunately as my brain was trying to find a way out, I was unable to yell out something, so he kids bike gets tangled up in mine, and we both go down. I don’t know if this is the second fortunate fall I’ve had, or just the semester of Judo I once took in college, but I did not do a huge amount of damage to my self. The kid had a bruised arm, but seemed to be ok. I was unable to ride back home, as the rear wheel was way out of true, and at that point, I was close enough, that I got a ride back.

I got a nice case of road rash on my upper left back/shoulder and my left hip, which is also swollen. I am icing the hip as I write this.. I dropped the bike off at my shop, to have it looked over and tuned back up. But, I am mostly upset at the fact that I am going to miss some riding as the bike is fixed. Go figure.

Anyway I don’t know what my point is, but sometimes I start thinking, that I wish this island were more bike friendly, between roads, cars, and other obstacles. I guess I should try and be more active with making this place better for us cyclist, but with two jobs, and the little riding time I have, how to fit that in? 😕

  2. As soon as I read "a mile and half from home" I noticed myself thinking "time to pay close attention to the road." As soon as I read "young kids merge onto my road from a side street on BMXes" I said to myself "start slowing down."

Point being...I learned the hard way that I am usually at my sloppiest at the end of my rides. And I have also learned the hard way that there is little in this world as unpredictable as kids on bikes.

Sorry for your hurt. Here's a link to some great road rash treatment info.

Kids are unpredictable period. Once when I was learning to ski I was sedately cruising down a nice little hill and out of nowhere a kid came down a very steep hill to my righ, not on a ski run, in a crouch and proceeded to ski right across my tips! I didn't even have time to yell. He went down over a bank, out of control and wrecked. He was sitting in the snow bawling his eyes out when the ski patrol came by to see what happened. Needless to say the kid was in the wrong for being off of a designated run and got his little butt chewed all the way to the club house! I realize this has nothing to do with cycling but only to point out the unpredictability of kids.

  4. Hi,

Thanks for the road rash advice rule62. Did not have much time to look it over at work, as I was away from my desk most of the day. It’s not as bad as I thought: Neosporin and Ibuprofen are my friend... 😄

Anyway, I guess you guys are right about kids. Of course, being at the end of the ride and fatigued, I was already thinking 6 steps ahead and not being as attentive as I probably should have been. :o But, I also figured this kid, whom I estimate is around 14, would have known better. Either that, or my upbringing in Italy made me wiser when I was younger. When I lived there as a young kid, I was taught how to cross some nasty roads. Italian drivers would try to mow people down at 120km/h.

  5. ALWAYS assume kids whether on bikes, rollerblades, whatever will jump out right in front of you.

  6. He he...you should see what they pull at the skatepark! You'll be up at the top of the bowl on the coping and some little fruit booter will go meandering across the bottom not having a care in the world...
That one cost me my tail bone the first day of my vacation...but when 205 lbs coming down fast and hit the kid in the rollerblades-I guess he was in worse shape...ughhh! Skate boards have lousy brakes
