But the results were really no surprise.

VBD's Sponsor probably has a very satisfactory day 🙂

Quit taking us off track, you moron. We've got the AMERICAN OLYMPIC

WHAT ABOUT DAVID ZABRISKE (USA)? 5th place at a minute and half back ain't
shabby in that field. David is a USPS rider, won a heck of a solo stage in
the Vuelta, and is the U.S. time trial champion. If he keeps up
performances like this, and improves in road races, he could have a good
role supporting Hincapie in the classics and can even be his own man in
    lesser tours.

And here I thought the "Jones gets busted!!!" post was the best thing I'd
read for some time to come. GotDamn, but r.b.r. is getting funny lately.

Nice ride and about bloody time he got a proper title. He's now got a pretty
good collection of World's TT medals: 2 golds, 2 silvers (U23 + Jr) and 1
bronze (U23). His brother Deane won the gold in the junior men's TT back in
    '94 too.

    Jeff,

Don't you think that something more should be done in these cases? UCI
points have a direct effect on riders salaries and team invites (as you well
know) and shouldn't a winner have the benefit of those points for the full
period they would have in a natural win? Why should a winner be penalized
only because someone else stole and benefited from his points? I would like
to see the UCI revise the system so that in these cases, the rightful winner
will only lose the "credit" after the full 12 months of finally assigning
them. Instead of having to earn last year's points Rogers should have his
position in the points bolstered by two Worlds ITT wins and then the results
from last year can be removed 12 months after his account credit was
reconciled. Maybe this sounds petty, but last year Rogers did not have the
WC points and jersey during the off-season. Even riders under a continuing
contract can ask for a raise if their performance was beyond expectations. I
don't see any other way for riders in these situations to be properly
recognized and compensated. Either that or at least at a mimimum Millar can
write a check for his WC bonus made out to Rogers.

Hey Dan, okay, I'll do it when I get a chance tomorrow sometime. But
first, can you or your wife find some reference to the survival curve of a
RBC? It's related to the question I had here:

It's so old it's kind of textbook stuff. I can't access the full text
articles online, maybe it's because they are so damn old, anyway, where
    I work now doesn't have a subscription/membership. But I was asking my
former PI and she told me to look up Mollison, PL. She also told me
that most medically necessary homologous transfusions are simply packed
red cells...together with white cells. "Leukoreduced" blood is
available and sometimes necessary, but it's expensive and not common.

As a big footnote, she told me "Donor" DNA has been detected as long as
27 years post-transfusion. (probably from white cells, but the point is
that it is possible for something like a transfusion mediated chimera to
occur...that the immune system doesn't always do what the textbooks tell
    us it should do.)

These articles/reviews have some neat sounding titles:

"Survival curves of incompatible red cells. An analytical review."
    Transfusion. 1986 Jan-Feb;26(1):43-50.
    Mollison PL.

    (incompatible?)

"Methods of determining the posttransfusion survival of stored red
    cells." Transfusion. 1984 Mar-Apr;24(2):93-6.
    Mollison PL.

Or if he really improves he can win in Philly next year so he can get
kicked off USPS and ride for Sierra Nevada or Jittery Joes in 2006.

The presence of donor DNA is very different to the presence of donor cells. Finding DNA with techniques such as PCR only requires incredibly small amount of DNA, even from dead cells. If you get a cold, you can still find the DNA (or RNA) of the cold virus weeks after the virus is out of your system. The PCR will still pick up "non-viable" (ie dead) viral DNA (or RNA). If you had hepatitis B 20 years ago and did not become a carrier (ie you are now immune and your body cleared the virus), you will still be PCR positive for the DNA of hep B virus in your liver cells. So, the presence of donor DNA many years later from a transfusion doesn't mean much and is not surprising.

However, the presence of donor red cells is a very different matter. These will only be present to a maximum of 120 days after the transfusion, after which, all donated red cells will be dead.

  18. Hey there cockmaster...the title of the thread is Amazing TT result, not
"Other than American TT result." Don't be [censored]...besides, David's TT
    time today was rather impressive.

VBD's Sponsor probably has a very satisfactory day 🙂

    - they were VDB's sponsor as of a year ago.. but he has gone through
another team since then (Fassa Bortolo) and is now on
    MrBookmaker.com-Palmans
    - they put Michael Rogers in 1st, Laszlo Bodrogi in 20th, and.. that's
it, as there were no other Quick.Step riders there
