I suspected I had a stiff link on a chain but as I needed to take the chain off to do other work I looked for the stiff link with the chain laid flat. I found it no problem. However, is there an easy, and foolproof, way to find a stiff link in situ?
Put the chain on smallest-smallest. Hold the rear derailleur just enough to relieve any tension on the chain. Slowly rotate the pedals backwards and observe the links as they come out of the lower pulley-wheel. Any tight links should be obvious

Ian's method and/or swivel each link by hand. Any stiff link will, er, feel stiff :-)

Agree with the rest of them - turn pedals backwards, watch for stiff link as it comes out the little cog bits of the derailleur. S'how I found mine (while cleaning/lubing chain in situ!).
All the other links lay flat to each other, the tight one produced a kink.
