SRAM chain questions

I have never used PC49, but between PC59 and PC69 there are no significant
differences. PC69 is nickled ouside, but it has no influence on the
durability and weight.

Use the least expensive compatible chain. The lower end Sram just lack plating,
not performance and durability. I would say use Sram over shimano due to them
having a snap link.

Generally shimano are a wee bit more flexible when new ad Sram last longer.

This is completely NOT true. Where does this information come from????
SRAM chains will shift just as well as Shimano and maybe even better.

I know this post should be in rec.bicycles.marketplace, but, since we're on
the subject, I've got a brand new SRAM PC59 for sale, if anyone is
interested.

Horse pucky. I've got an Ultegra crank (OK, so it's got FSA rings on
it.) and it shifts *perfectly* with a SRAM chain.

A new Shimano chain running on the Shimano rings and casette on my
Miyata shifted noisily and reluctantly in certain gear changes.
Swapping to a PC48 got rid of about half of that without any trimming.

YMMV. Shimano and SRAM both make different grades and models of
chain, with varying characteristics; the trick is to match the
application to the chain when making the selection. (*Most* of the
time it makes no difference at all, though, in my experience.)

"power" side of the chain, applying the rear brake, and then pushing on
a pedal with my foot.

Subsequent assembly has required substantially less force.

Hmm -- don't think I would have done that on my own, as I was concerned
about ever getting it off again and defeating the whole purpose of the link.
I've only got one more Shimano chain in use at the moment, and when that
goes I'll be 100% SRAM and won't have to worry about it. Good trick to know
though in case I ever see a good deal on Shimano chains that I just can't
pass up.

personal experience. please note that i'm not saying it /doesn't/
shift, just that it shifts /better/ - the side plates of the chain bow
out and are better picked up by the pins on the large chain wheel than a
sram chain that doesn't have them. examine a chain in action and look
where the pickup points are.

well, from the bike shop trenches. If we have components that are really tired
and the customer doesn't want to replace anything but wants good shifting, we
normally opt for a shimano chain cuz it seems a wee bit more flexible and
shifts a wee bit better than SRAM when new. BUT the Sram lasts longer.

I haven't tried the powerlink with an 8sp Shimano chain, so can't
comment on compatability issues there. My experience is with a 9sp
setup, and haven't had any problems at all.

Last time I saw someone with a 7sp bike they were still riding was
done in Louisana in the early 90's. Lot's of guys still riding 7sp
straight blocks. They were freeks, too.
