MTB Slick tyres

company who make Schwalbe tyres and tubes. £1.08 each in bundles of
50.

Does this seem like a reasonable price?

Tread pattern on a slick? I thought the distinguishing feature of a
slick tyre was, well, its "slickness" - its smooth or unpatterned
tread.

then you've obviously not seen it. It is a slick tyre with a few grooves cut
in to it. The shape of those groves is related to the name 'All Weather

Yebbut no pattern is boring.. look at the pictures. If I wanted real
performance I'd get a real tyre and wouldn't be riding the urban tractor.

Pretty! Seeing as tread pattern is academic for road tires, I wish
more manufacturers would use a similar level of imagination.

If thats those impac tyres I mentioned on an earlier thread you'll be
well impressed and so will your customers (assuming your retailing
them if you need to buy 50). Actually come to think of it the Impacs
were full slicks that I got. I paid about £13 for four tyres and four
inner tubes plus about a fiver postage I think. Great tyres and great
value. I noticed that DSI tyres are sold from the factory at 70 cents
each and Trago Mills retail them at £2.35. I suspect tyres made in
China will be no more expensive than those made in Sri Lanka and if
anything I'd expect them to be cheaper. So £1.08 seems a very good
price and I bet the quality is well up to standard as well.

Frankly tyres like many other things in cycle shops are a bit of a rip
off and basically they sell tyres at what people are willing to pay
rather than what it actually costs to make plus a reasonable margin. I
went to a cycle shop in Taunton and they charged £7.99 for a rear
light. Its the standard modern type of led light with flashing modes
etc.Tesco charge £3.36 last time I looked for exactly the same
product. Frankly you could buy two from Tescos plus a spare set of
batteries for both and still have change from the other price.
Assuming you bought a cheap pack of £1 alkaline 4xAAA batteries from
poundland. Many will assume that those £1.08 plus VAT tyres are a load
of rubbish but there is absolutely no reason to think this as the
reality is tyres are very cheap to manufacture. Probably less than 50p
each for almost all of them and easily less than a £1 for the very
best quality tyres.

simply because of the tread pattern; I did not consider anything
else, I just wanted them because I liked the pattern. They're
actually nice tyres and no punctures yet. Of course, it would
serve me right for having such a superficial reason for buying
them if they punctured every few metres.:-)

IIRC the latest iteration of 559 Schwalbe Stelvios are 28 mm wide rather
than the 25 of old, and seem to be more durable than GPs, as well as
demonstrably faster. Cheap they ain't, though. I've got S-Licks on my MTB
and a Fat Boy on the rear of the Speedmachine and am well satisfied with
both.

I got some Schwalbe Big Apples from Wiggle and they're great.
I went for the 2.0 size ones as I've got mudguards, it was mail order, and
so was worried that anything bigger wouldn't fit.
But they also come in 2.3 which would be nice and comfy.
They have a kevlar band and a reflective stripe on the sidewall.

reply as i am not a experienced mountain biker and my
knowledge of tires are limited,i've always thought fancy
tread patterns were a gimmick to sell the tires at inflated prices.

I agree, Specialized Fatboy are fast and very durable. Get the thinnest one you can and pump up as hard as you dare.

Mine are 10 years old and still going strong.

I agree, Specialized Fatboy are fast and very durable. Get the thinnest
one you can and pump up as hard as you dare.

S-Licks are excellent for grip and puncture resistance. Only
disadvantage is that they can be very tight to fit when new.

Just to let you all know I went for the S-Licks in the end. I figured
the bright yellow ones will go with my lime green frame and bright
yellow handlebar grips. Funny how people look at my bike and turn their
nose at it just because it is a "fun" colour without realising theres
nearly a grands worth of componentry on it!

Bright and sickly colours are the best thief deterrent I have come
across..... ;-)
