Even better, sit down next to the composite engineers from Specialized and Trek while they are having a malt liquor chugging contest and listen in.

Even if you were able to obtain proprietary design and test data from both companies, this would be a tough question to answer, since you'd have to define what you mean by "better lay up design". You could still have a lot of arguements about the importance of strength, fatigue life, or what the optimum stiffness or vertical compliance would be.

For example, if one frame has a 20% higher ultimate breaking strength, but weighs 200 grams more, which one would you say is a better design?
