I have not yet got broadband but done some research into providers. Plusnet
look pretty good, the folk who are with them are very happy according the to
reports on www.adslguide.org.uk

I have no connection with Plusnet.

Tesco may be cheap but I have heard tales of bad customer support and slow
speeds.

We've been on Freedom2Surf for about 18 months. No problems at all
with regard to speed, availability, reliability. I have never had any
need to speak to anyone at f2s it has been so trouble-free.
Definitely check out adslguide.org, though.

customer service than my original supplier, BT Openwoe (who were the
only game in town when I first went to ADSL).

FWIW, I'm happy with plusnet.

Plusnet gets good comments. They also inhabit uk.telecom.broadband so
if you have problems you can post there and they will pick it up and
respond. I went with Nildram who passed your test with flying colours -
awaiting to see if Pipex will knock them out of it but since I'm only on
a 1 month contract it doesn't bother me too much if they do.

The selector I was told was to ring sales and ring customer support and
ratio the number of rings before each is answered. It quickly tells you
which ones are more interested in selling to you than looking after you.
Some on that test can't be bothered even to answer the phone to sell
to you which is usually a steer clear indicator.

ZenADSL here. I would suggest perusing www.adslguide.org to see what
people are currently recommending. And consider a monthly rather than
yearly contract, the supplier will have to work harder to keep you on

Depends if you want capped or not. My Dad uses www.metronet.com which he is
happy with, except some occasional problems which they do address
immediately. I normally recommend Zen to reasonably heavy users/gamers.

I'm happy with them, but not much to report. Called technical support once
when I couldn't see out of their network. The bloke I spoke to couldn't
help, but knew what he was talking about and knew I had a vague idea as
well. The problem also resolved itself while I was on the phone.

I'm on a package they don't offer new any more, though, I think. DSLConnect
200.

Tried them when I was looking. I was needing an unusual but standard
ISDN to ADSL managed conversion. They didn't seem to have a clue about
it despite it being a standard BT Wholesale product. Gave up and went
to Nildram who did and always seem to know what they are talking about
when I've called. Now they are part of Pipex I would probably go for
Plusnet if I had to choose again.

Every reply I have seen has mentioned ADSL and recommended the
excellent www.adslguide.org.uk. If you have cable television there
is also the cable approach to consider.

Ha. I was on demon when they were the only ISP (dialup, of course).

Then they stopped sending me bills but continued to charge me via
direct debit. Then they sent the bailiffs round. Then I stopped the
account. Then they sent the bailiffs round again. Their tech people
may be OK but their accounts dept haven't got a clue.

I was thinking of them only yesterday when I received a letter saying
they were writing off my "bad debt" of £750. First I've heard from
them in years.

So their incompetance will probably result in a massive amount of work
on my part to avoid a bad mark with the credit scorers.
