im planning on building a training bike for this winter, as im a freerider. however the world of road bikes is as fraught with technical complications as the MTB world. i was planning on buying a set of SHIMANO WH-R540 wheels, but i want to run a campag groupset, i wondered if i can fit the wheels with a campag freewheel and then cassette etc, or wether i could run a shimano cassette with a campag mech, or perhaps a shimano mech with campag shifters. basically ive got campag shifters and want to use shimano wheels, any chance? if not how do mavic manufacture wheels which i assume you can use with both? is there a whole different hub for each type? thanks for your patience with my hairy legged off road ignorance!

Use the shimano wheels, use a shimano 9 or 10s cogset, matching chain and then use the Campagnolo ERGO, rear der...it'sll work just fine, we do this all the time.
You can also use an American classic cogset on the shimano wheels.
