I rode today. No, not MTB unfortunately. I did a century road ride to
get ready for next week's MS150. It was boring but I made it in 5:33.
The end.

A century is an awesome experience, especially when you reach the end...

Which MS? My sister and husband are riding City to the Sea (I think
that's it's name) in PA.

City to shore (which actually starts and ends in NJ), but I think that's
the one you are talking about. Right now we're hoping the remnants of
Ivan stay south. I don't think I'll enjoy 150 miles in the rain.

Civil War Cent?
If so, that's one hell of a time.

Depends. Gearing is higher on road bikes. I know that my mtbing is
stronger if I also ride on the road: my legs can push bigger gears and
my cardio engine is bigger.
MTBing is harder mainly because you're slower. 100 miles on a road bike
is merely an impressive feat. On a mtb (on trails), it's epic.

Agree. I wouldn't trade mtb'ing for anything. I find road riding to be
an extremely boring thing, but it does keep my heart rate at a steady
pace. I use it to train for mtb.

A century on a road bike in the eastern flatlands would be very easy
for most mountain bikers who ride regularly and don't have to "train"
on a road bike.

[censored]. Admit it. You like it. It's okay. You don't have to be a
'purist'.
Mountain biking is fun. Road biking is fun. So is BMX. So is riding a
unicycle (probably). Riding a Huffy is fun. Surfing is fun. Basketball
and softball are fun. Sticking marshmallows to your nipples is fun.
Blowing your arpit funk into a friend's face and then eating their
food is fun. Daydreaming about boffing supermodels is fun. Smelling
your chamois after a long ride is fun. Making fun of rollerbladers is
fun. Whatever. Outside of this newsgroup, everybody thinks you're
completely insane for wearing brightly colored spandex outfits with a
piece of foam strapped to your head. You're a grown man. Enjoy!

I'll admit that I just like being on a bicycle. In fact, I wish I
didn't have to work. I would bicycle all day long if I could.

I'll second both of those statements.
