Calder Freeway

I rode along the Calder to Macedon on Monday. Just wondering how far you can go past Macedon, safely that is.

Also are there any other routes around that area people have riden, and would recommend.

woulda thawt the better way to go would be thru Sunbury, Lancefield, turn left. then into woodend or up the back of Macedon (particularly naaasteee stretch of only 500m but has made me get off and walk a couple of times...).
There's quite a few 'B-roads' out that way for a quieter route with decent surfaces.
Never gone beyond there (apart from one trip to Daylesford)

Hey! Something I can unequivocally comment on! I lived in the area for most of my youth (sounds a bit archaic now) and can heartily recommend riding from Gisborne to Woodend on the Old Calder Hwy. V. few cars now the bypass has gone through. To get to Riddells Creek, you can go round the back of the airport, to Konagaderra, up a few short hills, keep heading west and north, get to Clarkefield, then 'C' road to R/Creek. Then across west to Macedon or Gisborne, then up the Hwy north to Woodend, east up Mount Macedon (the back way, not as steep as the front, a good climb if you're halfway fit), then down the front (v. fast and a bit twisty). Or go round the north side of the Mount to Lancefield or Romsey (nowhere near as steep), then back down the Sunbury road (great if there's a north{tail}wind).

Lots of possibilities. Just stay off Bulla Road. Yuk.

Nice one. My parents live up that way and I was planning on
checking out the roads around Macedon. I've only ridden from Woodend
to Mt Macedon once but that was before the bypass.

Thanks for the feedback dutchy and mfhor.

I did find the calder alright, not many cars, and wide emergency lane...the the ride home was a buzz, downhill all the way, with a slight tailwind.

I'll check out the routes next time I go.
