There are huge numbers of diesel-electrics, the Deltic was a particular type
fitted with the Napier deltic 18-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine (3 banks
of 6 cylinders opposed in 3 cylinders per bank, arranged as an equilateral
triangle). I know more about that than I ever wanted to because we have one
on our model railway, and because we heard a recording of one of them in
action - a truly amazing sound!

The prototype Deltic is in York railway musem. It's the blue one with the
American-style stripes and big single headlight.

My grandfather worked on the railways and when I was 14 years old he took me
to Haymarket depot and one of his friends was moving a Deltic between sheds.
I was allowed on and got to drive it for about 50 yards. That was fun.
