I bought a trek 1000 from a LBS and think that it may be too small. I'm 5'7" - 5'8" and was told that the 50cm would be best. Although, I now have 500 miles on it and am wondering if the overall size is correct. The entire time I've had the bike, I've been suspect that the frame is too small. When I am peddling, it just "feels small." On a recent ride, a more seasoned rider kept looking at my bike and stated "that bike looks too small for you." What do you guys think?

Here is another 'quick and dirty' option I just found in a book:
"The basic rule of thumb for determining the size of a road frame for an average built male is to measure your inseam from your groin to the floor in stocking feet. You subtract 10 inches (25.5 cm) from this measurement, convert it to metric, and it will be the correct frame size when measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube."

My guess is the LBS sold you the frame they had in stock. Did you test ride a 52 or 54 before buying the 50? Here's some basic questions:
1) Does the seatpost allow enough leg extension without going past the max line on the post? Did the LBS swap for an extended seatpost? 2) With the seat height adjusted correctly, is the drop from seat to handlebars more than 3 inches? 3) When you're pedaling in a comfortable position and look down at the handlebars, is your nose over the front of the bars? Did the shop put on an extended stem?

His inseam (standover) is inadequate for a 52 cm Trek. I'm the same height (5'8"😉, but i have a 30.5 inch inseam...which is just enough to have adequate clearance on a 52 cm Trek. He's a full inch shorter inseam. He'll be resting the jewels on the top tube of a 52 cm...something most of us would not prefer to do.

Oh, forgot about that check....that should be #1 on the list. I'm riding a compact frame now, so standover height isn't really an issue.
Seems Scott is off posting about buying a Litespeed now;don't know if he has even bothered to read the answers he's gotten here.
Oh, I'm reading alright. RELIGIOUSLY. I have been tweeking my seat height, setback and bar angle a bit. I'm getting closer to it feeling better. I also had just purchased some look pedals and realized I had them mounted to far towards the ball of my foot. I adjusted them so I'm using my toes more (guess I'm a toe rider) and it feels better. I think I'm gonna get it right (or closer to than it is now). Thanks for the feedback. You guys are awesome.
