The shipping from NZ isn't bad at all so long as you keep the order light -- two or three chains will be under the 1kg threshold and is a good way to stock up cheaply.

100% cycles has an Ultegra 9spd chain for $46, with a $9 "member benefit" to
spend on your next order....They also have a 105 9 spd chain for $36 and you
get a $7 "member benefit" . They are pretty competitive and I recently
replaced the whole drivetrain on my mtb with LX components through these
guys for a lot cheaper than I could find them anywhere else. Delivery was
within 2 days to Melbourne (I think they are located in Melton)

You should be able to buy a KMC 9sp chain virtually anywhere for about 30$.
Otherwise pay a bit extra & get a Wipperman which has a removable joiner ,
KMC have a one-use only joiner . Depending on your mileage don't forget to
budget for a new cassette if you are replacing a worn chain.

Shimano HG-53 is $30, e.g. at phantomcycles.com.au

Not colour-compatible with ultegra though.
Is there any practical difference between 9-sp HG chains?
Weight is same. All are bushless.
Pin hardness is important, but I can't find spec's for that.
No firm claims of extra wear that I can find, just marketing BS like
"crisp shifting". Oils is oils?

I prefer SRAM for the connector.

any extra charges for customs?, gst? any other taxes which may apply?

That's what you get in your virtual net bubble - no real world experience to draw on.

Can you actually talk to people you believe who have actually used/fitted/maintained the chain that seems "competitively priced"? In your scrimping and saving $5-10, you have missed out on some advice, which is what better shops charge for to justify their slightly increased markup.

Having your cake and eating it too. Just don't look down the road (the LBS will have closed down due to mailorder eroding their turnover) when you want some advice about what length it should be, what is a good lube, how to clean it to maintain 'that all-important new chain sparkly freshness', how you use the chainbreaker to get it to the right length, or are you fully technically savvy?

Then why the hell are you asking us what is a good 9 spd chain, then worrying about what colour it is?

I've tried asking the LBS guys about chain differences. Responses
are vague and inconsistent. I can do better on the net, but still
don't have any hard answers. Shimano isn't saying.

Why all this cross-subsidy? Its inefficient to have the LBS quote us
a too-cheap labour rate (not covering overheads), but add a huge markup
to parts. The result is too many bike shops, with mechanics often
sitting idle, or being salesmen. Or sales staff earning more than
mechanics :-(
The shops had best wake up and drop parts prices before the 'net
kills them. And stop getting ripped off by importers & distributors.
Join together and import directly if needed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you are on a usenet Australian cycling specific
NG and are suggesting that the LBS is the only place to get technical
advice?
