1. Ok, sorry to bring up the knees once again, but here goes...

I have been training pretty hard lately and I am having troubl with knee pain in my left knee on the outside...and i guess towards the front. I am used to extreme muscle pain and this feels more like something that isn't muscle. I'm pretty sure its a tendon or a ligament or something. If anyone might know what particular part of that body I'm trying to describe, please let me know. The problem is only in the left knee...and my left leg is weaker than my right, if that could make a difference. I've read about improper sizing and I'm going to check that. I'm also think of switching my pedals from cheap shimano spds to something else. If that doesn't help what I'm really looking for is maybe stretches or something to work the knee out. If anyone can help please let me know. I'm riding a fixed gear with no breaks too, and I'm aware that knee pain is to be expected...i usually push back with my right foot and pull up with my left to stop..so it could be that also. I really appreciate any help you guys can offer.

  2. Try checking how your feet are positioned when pedalling. I also had that pain and someone suggested to use cleats with float. Now I can at least position my feet to where it is neutral, which is pointed outward and the pain disappeared. It could also be a lot more like incorrect saddle height, not fitted properly on the bike.

  3. See a sports medicine professional....preferably one well versed with cycling injuries.

  4. I agree with the previous two posts.

    1) see a sports medicine doctor (less common than a general practioner). There are multiple muscles which attach to that area. In addition you have the lateral collateral ligment and lateral meniscus. The knee is complicated joint. A sports doc, a good internal medicine doc, or an orthopedic surgeon can not only diagnose your ailment but also refer you to a Physical Therapist who can provide various stretches and exercises for your knee.

    2) upgrade your pedals to pedals with more float. I couldn't ride clipless pedals for a long time due to their lack of lateral rotation. My right knee (which has seen 2 reconstructive surgeries) needs to rotate in towards my bike more than my left. I finally found speedplay pedals and have been very pleased.

I would address your pain as soon as possible so as not to further damage your knee.

    Good Luck

  5. I had the same problem, pain in the same area, and only one knee - here is my story and how I solved it (from another forum):

New rider, bike, shoes, pedals. Was fitted at local LBS, but had to borrow shoes and pedals (I didn't have mine yet). Did the "knee over spindle" and "seat height" and feel right (to this newbie). I don't rock my hips and on the trainer, it appears that I am in alignment (i.e. hip, knee, pedal).

I have ridden twice and have knee pain in only in the front of my right knee (at the 7 o'clock position when looking at knee from the front). Appeared after riding, not during. Knee is both sore and tender to the touch.

I have searched "knee pain" in the forum, and have a few ideas:

Saddle height - I am thinking this is not the problem, as my left knee is fine, and as far as I can tell, both my legs are the same length.

I am thinking cleat alignment. Either fore / aft or toe-in / toe-out. I think I need more toe-out in the right cleat, and maybe the ball of my foot is not quite centered over the pedal.

In the end, I ended up raising my saddle 5 mm, and adjusting the cleats so that my foot was further away from the cranks by about 10 mm. After completely resting my knee before another ride (5 days for me), everything has been OK, no more knee pain.
