  1. If I sit on about 95% of my maximum heart rate for over 10 minutes or so, is
it dangerous for me, should I back off.
    I don't feel completely stuffed.

You can sit on >95% HRmax for over 10mins.. damn, you're doing better
than me. Sounds like whatever you are using as your 'max' isn't actually
your max. If you don't feel stuffed after an effort like that I don't see
how it could be bad for you.. I'm no doctor though so don't quote me
    when you explode. 🙂

I find when it's hot my HR goes up. My "record" is 181 for 2 hours (max is
    193) in a race where it was 33 degrees. I can attest that I was completely
    stuffed afterwards.

The question I'd ask Billy is whether he really knows his max? And what
conditions was he riding under? Fresh? etc.

    Yep.

Well.. I'd have to be in a race that lasted 2hrs first! 🙂

    I've sat around 90% for longer races (1hr+) and TT's (1hr-ish).

I spent the first 30 minutes of a h'cap race at 95% a few weeks back. After that the first hill felt like riding into a brick wall. Needless to say the remaining 2 hours was pretty lonely. I try to do 2x 15min max efforts (95%+) per week in training and at 44 y.o. I haven't died yet but completely knackered afterwards.

I agree with Hippy - maybe your max isn't really your max.

Modified copy of what I wrote on the "Heart Rate Help" thread, just for comparison:

I'm 42 and reasonably fit but average only about 70 - 120km / week, mostly recreational with a little club racing thrown in.

My max HR seems to be about 193.

The highest average HR I can sustain for different lengths of effort (climbing) are:

    ~10 mins : 186 (= 96% max HR)
    ~20 mins : 182 (= 94%)
    ~60 mins : 175 (= 91%)

(and after any of those efforts I'm toast for the rest of the ride)

I seem to get to these sort of levels pretty quickly when working medium-hard, and really fit riders seem to be able to go hard at much lower HRs than I can.

  7. Did ya see Greg Welsh on Enough Rope? Greg's heart rate got up to 320 bpm. That must be wrong?

It can happen, in pathological circumstances. Those aren't 320 effective
beats per minute, though; each beat does about as much work as one hand
    clapping.

I also can sit on quite high heart rates.
    I am 35 y.o.
I have seen max hr on my monitor in the high 190's, also reached 202 (when I was still in
    my 20's)
I can sit on the early 190's (95% max) for about 10 minutes, and provided I ease off for a
while, down to 80% max hr it's OK.
I have sat in 90%-95% max hr range for about 45 minutes at a time (steady hill climb)

One point I would like to confirm with others, if I am going under about 75% max hr it
hardly feels as if I am trying. I feel as if I could easily cycle at 75% max all day
provided I have enough to eat and drink.

And when riding in a bunch with others that have hrm, even amongst those of similar age,
they always seem to have a lower hr than me.
