Last night as we gathered for our Tuesday night club ride, the racer guys
were all gathered up shooting the breeze in the parking lot, laughing,
sharing stories, etc. Then up rides this kid who turned pro last year and
got a spot on one of the top national US teams. He's one of the rising
young starts of the sport here. Anyway, suddenly all the laughter and
banter in our little group just stopped. It was comical. You could tell
everyone was reassessing the ride ahead. We all thought we knew what we
were in for and who to watch out for, etc. Now it was a whole new ballgame.
And sure enough, it turned out to be about the hardest ride I've done all
season. But the funny part is that it wasn't that pro guy initiating any of
the action. It was all the wannabes trying to show off for him that were
making things tough. The pro guy showed up with 73 miles in his legs
already. He was just cruising.
