On monday evening i had an odd thing happen, i was peddaling home(20km) and
my rear brakes would come on, and go off... i thought i had a bulge. I
checked it, and saw no damage. I disconnected the brakes so i only had the
front, just to get me home.
This morning(tues) i was checking out my rear as to y it did that, and i saw
the worst thing i have ever seen.
On the sidewall of the rim, in the middle, was a crack, 2inches long!!! the
bulge was the upper part sticking out.
Not having a rim, i biked to work(20km).
I called the place where i bought it, a canadian tire store. They dont sell
rims.
I called my LBS, they can get one in for monday. I doubted it would last
that long.
The only other place here that sells parts is a local Sport Chek. Called
them, they had one, for $30. I also asked if they had a new cassette for it,
as mine is severly worn. They didnt.
I got there(10km) after work. They had a used cassette, one that was on for
about a month. I checked it over as he started to dissasemble the bike. it
was not sharked toothed, it was clean, the chain rings were true... the
freewheel worked properly. It looked fine, so i ashed him to put it on. It
was $5. As he was cleaning the bike around the rear derailer, he noticed
that my cogs for the rear derailer were missing teeth, and had alot of worn
teeth. he had a new one, but it was a warranty replacement for another
bike... the guy didnt want it, as it didnt match, so he had kept it. He put
that on. the part was $5.
After replaceing the cable and housings, adjusting, and lubing.... the bill
was under $50
Guess where im getting my work done.
So, on my POS Canadian Tire Supercycle bike the only orriginal parts are:
Frame, Bar ends, Handle bars, Head set and bar to handle bars, front
suspension forks, front rim, bottom bracket with pedals and gear cogs, seat
post, and seat.
Im keeping this bike. Next spring, i ll spend at least $700-$1000 for a
better bike, and keep this as my "other" bike.
