  1. I've just picked up a new bike with a 105 groupset (I've been riding previously for 2 years). The crank is a double 39/53. My problem is that there are some pretty mean hills in my area and it can be tough to get up these hills with the 39 on the front and a 25 on the cassette.

Is it possible to replace the 39 with a 30 from a triple crankset (I cant find any intermediate steps) so to have a 53/30 or is that just rediculous?

Or am I just soft and should get on my bike more often.

    Thanks.

  2. Depends how big your hills are!

I have a double on my bike and purposefully bought one rather than a triple in order to make me work harder and get fitter. There's a couple of fairly mean hills around my place too.

It's definitely worked, as I don't have the option to bail out it's made me a stronger rider. I don't get dropped by other riders and I wouldn't buy a triple now.

If your hill is a 6 mile category 1 then I would maybe think differently! 🙂

Your BCD is 130. www.chainrings.com sells a 37. A 30 requires a 74 BCD. just say no to the Krispy Kremes, or get a triple.

  4. "just say no to the Krispy Kremes" - Impossible

  5. As others have said, the BCD is 130mm. You can go a little smaller than 39T, but not much, so it's not worth it, IMHO.

But you can get a new cassette or alter your existing one to get lower gearing. 12-27 cassettes are available. Or you could buy a loose 28T cog and turn your 12-25 into a 12-28 by removing the 14T (change 12,13,14,15,17,19,21,23,25 to 12,13,15,17,19,21,23,25,28). Or you could even use a 30T instead of the 28T.

I just tried one for the first time this past weekend. Maybe it's just because they were overhyped but my opinion is that they're massively overrated! 😄

For the original poster: Why didn't you get a triple?

Don't worry, those hills will get easier as you log more miles. Just keep riding.

    Haha! Yes, good point Boudreaux!

  9. Thanks for all your input, it is much appreciated.

I didn't have the option of a triple on the bike as I picked it up cheaply, the only one left was a double in the right size.

    Thanks again.🙂
