Candy for the Road?

Okay, since you asked. I put Candy SLs on my MTBs, as well as my road bike. I wear the same pair of Sidi Dom 4 for all uses, all bikes. I find the Candys---and Doms, for that matter---work quite nicely in on- and off-road applications.

I recently picked up the new, road-specific version, the Quattro SL. Only tried them on one short ride so far, but initial impressions were positive. The platform is a tad longer, fore-to-aft. If there's a downside, it's that the standard cleat is an SPD (non-road) 2-bolt pattern, not the typical 3-bolt. They're also pricier than the Candy SL.

I know there's a road-specific cleat for the Egg Beaters, but have never actually seen one. Is it a 3-bolt? If so, you could use those for the Quattro. My Quattros came with a cleat plate for walking in, but haven't used it, since the Doms have treads, being an off-road shoe.

BTW, I had to use the shim that comes with the Candys between the cleat and the sole of the shoe for better results.

The roadie cleat for the Crank Bros pedals is 2-bolt (most if not all MTB shoes can't take a 3-bolt LOOK style cleat fixing), but would be way too wide/big to fit in the clearing of most MTB shoe soles.

What don't you like about the SPD pedals you have on at the moment? Is it weight? (I know that 505s are like bricks!)

If it's not something fundamental about the SPD system that's the reason for upgrading, maybe look at a lighter SPD pedal like the M540. They are fairly cheap, reliable, you get to keep using your existing cleats, plus you'll get a spare set with the new pedals.. (SPD cleats last a lot longer than Eggbeater ones anyhow)

Thank you for the responces so far. The 505 SPD's really aren't that bad - but I would like something a little lighter with some more support. I look at the 505's as freebies since they came with the bike and my LBS would only give me a $25 credit for them at the time of purchase. I would probobly prefer a "pure" road peddle but I don't want to invest in new shoes at this time as well. I am hoping the Candy will fit with my SIDI's (without having to butcher the treads) and that they will give me a little more support.
