This is a big no-no in time trialling. Thou shalt not take pace, even
    in low key club events.

Apparently there is a great skill in composing the field to avoid
this, the slowest (you have to give your best time on the entry form)
riders are given a 9/4 number so the fast boys/girls (ending in 0/5)
will go straight past, but on longer rides it gets more difficult.
Needless to say I was an 8 or 9 ;-)

Don't you just split the field in 5, and do 0,1,2,3,4 from faster to
slower (ditto 5,6,7,8,9). Except with the first 0 moved to the last
    position.

No. Assuming you have 40 rides, you seed:

    Fastest man: 40
    Second fastest: 20
    Third fastest: 30
    4th : 10

    Then:

    5th : 35
    6th : 25
    ....
    7 : 15

    Then I think it's 7's then 3's then 8's then 1's then 6's then 2's then 9's and 4's

Then you deal with any requests like "can I have a start near by mate Joe" by
swapping around riders on the same last number.

It's made more confusing my recent national Rudy project stuff changing this system
by putting all the fastest (seeded) riders at the end at two minute intervals.
