  1. The chainset on my bike is a triple Stronglight. The inner ring is well worn
and needs replacing. Looking at ring prices it doesn't make sense to buy the
rings as a new chainset doesn't cost that much more! Getting on a bit now
    (60) (so is the bike!) so need low gears, ideally say 24/34/44 sounds about
right for me. Can anyone point me in the right direction and to be honest
£50 (or less) would be my budget. Standard square ends with 14 mm nut.

    Thanks in advance.

What sort of Stronglight is it? Depending on the quality of your
current chainset it might be worth replacing the rings.

This probably isn't a good economy as your Stronglight triple (if it's
anything like old Stronglight doubles I know) is a really good one. A
similar quality modern chainset would set you back over £100.

St John Street cycles (whom I'm currently boycotting because of their
'edinburgh bicycles' website scam, but anyway) will sell you a new
Stronglight ring for about a fifteen quid, depending on size. Your LBS
may be able to do similar.

That's a touch harsh, isn't it? I mean, it was 4 years ago, and they
undid it and apologised as soon as people realised.

Could someone fill me in on what St John Street Cycles did,
I'am new to this news group and not up to scratch on website scams.

Very little. It registered edinburghbicycles.com in a fit of
excitement (and back before domains were cheap) and redirected it to
itself. When questioned on this they changed it to link to both
    edinburgh-bicycle.co.uk and sjscycles.com .

It was, IMHO, a silly judgement error, before internet trading was a
big enough thing that people realised ordinary ethics applied.

Which definitely counts as 'passing off' in my book, and that has been
illegal since the middle ages and unethical for longer than that.

Watch closely which type of Stronglight this is. The classic cranksets
do not accept inner rings smaller than 28 teeth due to the bolt circle.
So you might end up needing to replace the chainset altogether.

Just how stupid would you have to be to not realise that you were buying
stuff from SJSC and not EBC? I doubt someone that clueless would be
tying their own shoelaces let alone buying stuff on the web.

And then slap a fiver on top for P&P. Spa Cycles (something of a
Stronglight specialist) or Settle Cycles ought to be able to offer
same, but with better value for money.

Thanks to all that helped. The above is from Settle Cycles.
Dont really know what 86mm pcd means - can you inform?
The chainset originally was on a Peugeot bike and is about I guess 10 years
    old.
There are five 'arms' on the crank, I cant see any model number.
Do you think the above will fit?

    Cheers.

pcd = Pitch Circle Diameter = Bolt Circle Diameter

I don't know but you can check the BCD by measuring distance between two
adjacent bolt holes on the existing chainring. BCD will be 86mm if that
measurement is 50.5mm. Ring should fit if the BCD and number of arms (or
    holes) is correct.

Ideally middle rings for triple chainsets should be designed as middles,
though double inners will fit and work to some extent. Modern middle and
outer rings have pins that help the chain climb up from the smaller ring.
