Cat 5 is entry level, and Cat 1 is the top level.
Categories? As in racing? Or as in different types of cycling? If you mean the latter, there's mountain, track, and road cycling as general categories. For mountain there's downhill, cross country, (cyclocross), freestyle and others. Track has keirin, madison, and many others, and road cycling has time trials (team and individual), road racing, criteriums, etc. All of them are difficult in there own way. Track is primarily a sprinter's sport, while road is more for endurance riders.
i mean what yellow velo said. yeah so before i go into it i'll probably have to get a license to race in cat 5. will?
I'm only 17 yrs old, so i'm pretty young which is probably a good thing and i know i get really good at the sport i just need some direction to how to road cycle and strategies to go along with it

Just go to the race and tell them you are new and want to get involved. They should be able to take care of things from there by finding someone who can guide you through the process, provide info, etc. Most races are eager to get new blood, so just try to put on your best face and don't be too proud to ask questions.

see the following for an explanation of general category requirements:
(Yes it is US link but it's the only one I know of the top of my head)
addendum:
Here's the Canadian site, but I don't know specifically where they list categorization:
Well thanks for all your help, i'll look into it and ask some questions
