Hi all,
I have a '90 Stumpjumper Comp frame and SOME parts that have occupied a
prominent place in my storage closet for almost 8 years after I had the
frame repainted.
I was going to get at it 'someday'.
I loved riding that frame, maybe because it was really more like a road
bike with off-road componentry (hardtail, hard 'nose', 7-speed XT, 1"
threaded headset) and I'd love to ride it again.
Is it worth rebuilding (I hate to throw it away)?
(I must add that I no longer have the crankset and BB).
I'm wondering about a number of things:
Since I need to buy a new crankset, will a 9-speed crank/rings work with
my 7-speed hubs/cassette?
What size BB would I need?
If I discover I'd like to upgrade to an 8- or 9-speed wheel/cassette,
would current 9-speed wheels/hubs fit between the dropouts of that
(7-speed) Cro-Moly frame, both rear and front (I want to continue to use
the original fork)?
Will my old 7-speed XT rear derailleur work with a 9-speed cassette,
given that I'd be using my old-school, bar-top, thumb shifters?
Am I insane for considering such a project?
Thanks all.
Thomps.
