Yesterday's New Forest was a good example of something or other; I was one of the first up to the Needles, but dallied around finding the viewpoint, by the time I left, the leading group was long gone; I caught sight of them and after about 20 mins caught them, but by that time there was no lead group, they had all split into 3's and 4's and I finished the ride with the same group that I joined 20 km into the ride. In fact had it not been for ferries Tim, Julia and I would all have finished around the same time. The best way of striking up conversation is around the subject of the route and info controls, and "have you ridden this before?". It often goes a bit quiet towards the end as everyones's thought turn to "only [censored] km to go" but We are a sociable lot really, honest ;-)

Flattery will get you everywhere Martin! I think even without the ferry you would be abit quicker than me! I can' say I have ever had problems riding audax as a singleton - I always seem to meet someone travelling at my pace who's friendly - however I have never done an audax with only eight entries so you may have just got a group who wanted to do a "fast time" for 150 as it looked pretty fast to me.

The eight consisted of a group of 3, group of two and three single including me. The singles seemed more keen on chatting but I think also that the speed mean't that they were able to do so.

metric century ? it was faster than I thought it would be. I was lead to believe there would be allsorts of riders with differing paces and machines. Thank heavens I took the Merckx, I wouldn't have been able to do that time on my old tourer !

I did Manchester 100 a few years ago (done it three times in total) and my time was 6:10 but we did stop for 40 minutes at the halfway point as the marshals were not ready on the second half of the route. The riding time was thus around 5:30.

Manchester is still on, this years edition was yesterday. The stop was 30 mins but we arrived early one year. So did you do the first edition of Norwich and get your name in the comic ? I was in for the first Manchester 100, it started and finished in the velodrome carpark then.
I am very familiar with the climbs on the Ronde, I have ridden most of them including the Muur de Grammont.
Dunno, it was organised by C+ at the time, never checked, it was 9 years before my next 100 miler (Battle and Back) unless you count various extended London-Brightons
