im just getting into road biking after been converted from downhill mtbiking. unusual question, but i was just wondering whether 60 mph is realistically possible on a road bike and what sort of size chainring would i need to get to that kind of speed. i remember hitting 35 mph on my little junior mtbike thing when i was a kid and that felt stupidly fast so ide love to see what 60 feels like.

60 mph is totally possible
Often requiring a decent descent and some aerodynamic work as well as pedalling on your part, but yeah totally.
You can hit 50km/hr on the flats if your in your 53/11 and just blasting away but I don't even think Lance could HOLD 60 mph -
yes, i have hit 60mph down a very steep, straight hill. i was pedaling my 53x12 as fast as i could. i have done 70mph drafting a suv
i am sure that elite track sprinters could get well into the 60s on many good decents. even into the 70s, unassited(not drafting a car)

In this year's Giro d'Italia, there was a descent that was 10% gradient and straight down with a good straight run off. Without really trying the peloton was doing 110km/h (or 69mph).

totally possible. The pro's do it all the time. I've almost hit 60. It was an extremely steep downhill and I had a tailwind. I can't spin fast enough at 50+ to actually do any more. I just start sprinting until I spin out then get in a little aero tuck down on the top tube with your knees and elbows in. I read an article about how the pro's do a ninja tuck when downhilling so I had to go out and find a hill and try the aero position for myself. Get down on the top tube and suck your knees and elbows in and hold your handlebar in the middle. It's pretty scary at first.

As other people have said, it's completely possible but has more to do with the steepness of the hill than what kind of gearing you have. Not very often do people hit 60 miles an hour while still pedaling, it's usually aero-tuck...then pray.

Also helps to be on the heavier side.

In the late 90's Elke Brautsart (spelling??) who was a downhill mountain biker for the Schwinn team did 128 MPH on a downhill. It may have been a record at the time. I'm pretty sure it was down ski slopes in the snow.

I think that record's been broken (if it was the same one). Some downhill racer went down a glacier in France and went 132.~ mph.
