FWIW, the Manchester Velodrome taster sessions provide a bike and helmet.

Based on my trip there you will be OK with trainers -- but make them
reasonably compact ones to fit in toe clips -- not the massive things
beloved of youth a month or three back (fashion has probably changed again
now). Cycling shoes should be Look compatible.

You will be required to wear a lid. Gloves are also useful.

You should phone and check the details. IIRC booking a bike was 'a good
idea' (TM).

Tip -- keep pedalling & don't be afraid to lean into the bends.

At Manchester you can use your trainers, their bikes have Look Pedals but
they have inserts that provide clips & straps. They insist on a helmet.
Their taster sessions cost £7.20 for adults and last one hour, this includes
bike hire. They are unstructured, once the coach realises you are not going
to ride wrecklessly he leaves you to it. A few taster sessions then you can
start proper training to gain track accreditation which you need to race on
the track.

Most riders take their own pedals and shoes. The officials should
insist that you at least use toeclips - you really do *not* want to be
riding a fixed wheel with platform pedals.

At Newport the use Look compatible pedals. If you do not have Look shoes
they provide a toe clip that slots into the pedal cleat.

Ordinary road pedals would NOT be allowed -- I think 'cos the metal would
tend to gouge lumps out of the track.

At Manchester, shoes are also provided, as the bikes are fitted with Look
pedals. When booking you tell them what size bike you need and what size shoes.
