I'm looking to ride from San Francisco to Sonoma once or twice a week through the good season. Does anyone have any good route suggestions?
So far, it looks like the best I've found takes me on surface streets through Sausilito and San Rafael to Sir Francis Drake, then Nicasio to Point Reyes/Petaluma, then Old Redwood Highway which basically gets me to where I'm going.
Any other suggestions?
I gather I can actually ride on one section of the 101 but that doesn't sound like much fun.
What part of 101? Im a resident- I bet there is a way around it, but I don't know if you are going to Sonoma proper, or undisclosed areas of Sonoma county- Your an animal though- that is going to be a hell of a ride know matter what Cheers

Oh, it wasn't too bad. I was on my way up to Rohnert Park. The cars take away from the start of the ride, but once you get to the hill on Sir Francis Drake and out to Nicasio, it's definitely a nice ride.
I was an animal, back when I did centuries on my mountain bike at 15 years old. I could use a little more fitness these days!
Did you go down into Sausalito? That hill is a bomber! I did that ride (from Palo Alto to Marin Headlands) when I was about 15 as well. It was all hills from what I remember until, your right, Nicasio, and then it was beautiful. I don't think I could do it today...but maybe someday.
Glad too here you made it allright and had fun (except for the cars of course)- too bad you didn't come a little further into the North end of the county. We ride between Cloverdale and Healdsburg all the time, right through a billion wineries and if we tire of those, we head for the lake- really some spectacular country to see on a bike Cheers
