Usually at home I don't have any trouble with my bike computer. In summer time however I cycle in cyclo sportive events. Also in rainy conditions. Until now no cycle computer that I used could stand the rainy conditions several days after one another. After a few hours the screen of almost any computer blanks out. I have seen this happening with almost all other competitors too. Strange, because with a watch there's no problem at all, right?
Does anybody think he or she has the perfect watertight computer?
3 of my bikes have the cateye mity 3 cyclocomputer and they have never had any problem in the rain. They are not designed to be rain resistent. I just bought them for 15$ each at performancebike.com. My cyclocross bike has the rain resistent cateye enduro. I can't tell any performance difference between it and the cheaper one. I live in the pacific northwest and ride in the worst downpours.
I have used Saran Wrap (transparent food wrap) to cover the computer display unit. I keeps the unit dry and doesn't effect the visibility of the display.
Regarding the screen going blank, is this a problem in rain or sunshine. LCD displays have a known problem of going blank when they get hot, which can easily happen since they tend to sit in direct sunlight. The problem goes away as soon as they cool down. This same problem doesn't happen with watches because they are not subjected to hours to direct sunlight. No sure if this applies, but thought I would mention it.
