Cyclists return to road after German accident

Two Australian cyclists injured in a fatal smash in Germany in July will return to competition next month. Kate Nichols and Alexis Rhodes were injured when a car smashed into their training squad, killing their team-mate Amy Gillett.

New South Wales cyclist Nichols will compete in Victoria's Bay Classic early next year, while South Australian Rhodes will take part in Amy's Ride - a fundraiser for the Amy Gillett Foundation.

Nichols said her main goal was to enjoy racing again.

"It's definitely been a tough time getting back out on the road with cars and things, and it's a slow process and I'm taking it slowly, but definitely determined to get fit to get amongst it in the racing, she said.

Nichols said she had been back on the bike for two months and was feeling good.

"Since the accident you definitely question things like riding but I realise my passion for racing and that's why I do the sport and I'm very determined to get back up to fitness and have fun racing again.

Meanwhile, Gillett's husband Simon said it was fantastic to see his wife's former team-mates return to competition.

Mr Gillett said he was not surprised by their determination to return to cycling.

"To an outsider they seem amazing, but if they weren't doing that in rehab they'd be doing that in training and on the bike and that's just the type of people they are," he said.

"But a few of them have got range of motion issues with limbs that are creating some major difficulties for them, and they really need to get through those before they can think about getting back on a bike."
